Impossible World is an artwork that envisions future environmental technologies yet to be realized. AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) technology, which translates sensor data into human language, is currently being developed to assist patients and individuals with disabilities who face verbal communication barriers. In Impossible World, however, this is reimagined as a speculative future technology that translates data collected from Paldang Lake—a protected natural environment and the primary drinking water source for Seoul and its greater metropolitan area—into human language.
Within this work, an AI character autonomously identifies significant events and constructs a narrative based on the sensor data from Paldang Lake, which is received, accumulated, and analyzed in real time.
The installation features a long panoramic image captured by a camera affixed to a sumac tree on the shore, programmed to automatically take a photograph every hour over the course of a year and a half. Meanwhile, the tall, vertical screen displays footage acquired from a drone programmed to repeatedly fly and film the exact same flight path over a 15-month period.
Ultimately, through the lens of these unrealized future technologies, Impossible World questions the possibilities, limitations, and underlying fears that lie beyond the boundaries of human perception.
<불가능한 세계> 는 현재에는 실현되지 않은 미래의 환경기술을 상상하며 만들어진 작품이다. 센서의 데이터를 인간의 언어로 전환하는 AAC (보완대체소통) 기술은 언어소통이 불가능한 장애인이나 환자를 위해 개발되고 있는 기술이지만, <불가능한 세계>에서는 서울과 수도 권 지역의 식수원으로 보호되고 있는 팔당호라는 자연환경에서 수집된 데이터를 인간의 언어로 전환하는 미래의 기술로써 상상된다. 이 작품 에서 AI 캐릭터는 실시간으로 수신하고, 축적하며, 분석되는 팔당호의 센서 데이터들을 기반으로 스스로 중요한 이벤트들을 판단하고 내러티 브를 만들어낸다. 긴 파노라마 이미지는 팔당호에서 1년 반의 시간 동안 강변의 옻나무에 고정된 카메라에서 매 시간 동안 자동촬영 되도록 프로그래밍 된 카 메라에서 촬영되었다. 세로의 긴 화면은 15개월의 시간 동안 동일한 경로로 비행하며 촬영하도록 프로그래밍된 드론에서 얻은 영상을 기반 으로 만들어졌다. ‘불가능한 세계’ 는 실현되지 않은 미래의 환경기술을 통해 인간의 인식을 넘어서는 가능성과 한계, 두려움에 대해 질문한다.
