Sensing Cinema was filmed at SONGEUN, the Herzog & de Meuron-designed exhibition space where the artwork also made its debut. The piece reimagines the building as an art museum of the future, utilizing performance to portray the future audiences who visit it.
Created in collaboration with the performance group Mu:p, the work envisions a future paradigm of art where distant landscapes are transmitted as real-time data directly into the brain to be sensed and experienced. In this speculative scenario, the performers in the museum receive this data through body parts entirely devoid of sensory cells, such as their fingernails and hair.
Reflecting on a future that will be dominated by increasingly immersive and hallucinatory imagery, these spectators of the future are depicted in a manner that is at once comical and bizarre.
<센싱 시네마> 는 이 작품이 처음으로 전시되었고, 헤르조그와 드뫼롱이 건축한 전시장 ‘송은’ 에서 촬영되었다. 이 작품은 이 전시장 건물을 미래의 미술관으로 설정하고, 이 곳을 방문한 미래의 관객들의 모습을 퍼포먼스를 통해 보여준다. 퍼포먼스 그룹 ‘뭎’ 과 협업으로 만들어진 이 작품은 먼 곳의 풍경을 실시간 데이터를 통해 뇌로 직접 전송 받아 감각하고 감상하는 미래의 예술작품을 상상한다. 이 작품에서 퍼포머들 은 미술관에서 손톱과 머리카락, 털 등의 감각세포가 없는 부분들 통해 데이터를 전송받는다. 더 몰입적이고 환각적인 이미지가 지배할 미래를 생각하며, 미래의 관객들은 우스꽝스럽고 기괴한 모습으로 제시된다.
