First Light traces the evolution of astrophotography alongside the development of the astronomical telescope, spanning from glass dry plates and analog film to modern CCDs. Through a video installation, the work reconstructs the process of capturing the unreachable starlight of the cosmos using mirrors, lenses, and imaging technology. It reflects on the human desire to capture distant light with ever-greater clarity, a desire manifested in long-exposure techniques and stacking software that enhances resolution by combining multiple photographs.
Utilizing a rear projection method on a transparent screen, First Light is designed so that the projector's beam itself becomes an integral part of the image. Viewers are invited to physically sense the light of the gallery's projector alongside historical astrophotographs. These archival images are presented together with video footage shot using an equatorial mount at locations celebrated by amateur astrophotographers.
<최초의 빛> 은 유리 건판 사진부터 아날로그 필름, CCD 에 이르기까지 천체망원경의 발달과 더불어 변해온 천문사진의 역사를 추적한다. 거울과 렌즈, 그리고 이미지 기술을 통해 닿을 수 없는 우주의 별빛을 포착해온 과정을 영상 설치로 재구성한다. 긴 시간의 노출로 이미지를 포착하는 촬영기법과 여러 장의 사진을 쌓아서 선명도를 높이는 스태킹 소프트웨어 기술을 통해 먼 곳의 빛을 더욱 선명하게 포착하고자 하 는 욕망에 대해 생각한다. <최초의 빛> 은 투명 스크린에 리어 프로젝션 (rear projection) 방식을 사용하여, 프로젝터의 빛이 이미지의 일부가 되도록 만들어졌다. 관 객들은 역사적인 천문 사진들의 이미지와 함께 전시장의 프로젝터의 빛 자체를 감각하게 된다. 이러한 아카이브 천문 사진들은 아마추어 천 문 사진가들의 출사 장소로 유명한 장소들에서 적도의를 이용해 촬영한 영상과 함께 보여진다.
